I need to post something today in order to keep up the momentum I’ve been building, so I’m gonna provide a list of my all time favorite anime. I’ll revisit this now and then to go into more detail explaining why these are my picks for the greatest anime of all time.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion
- Flip Flappers
- I might very well just be riding off the high that came with Flip Flappers last season, so maybe this will change. It is the most triumphant anime of all time. It has a happy ending, and that was refreshing.
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica
- Monogatari
- I’ve watched the entirety of this series over 13 times
- Oregairu
- Toradora
- Shin Sekai Yori
- Eden of the East
- ef: a tale of memories/melodies
- Clannad/(Afterstory)
- Consider this a guilty pleasure. I understand very well all of this series’ problems.
- Spice and Wolf
- Hyouka
- Sound! Euphonium
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya + Disappearance
- Gatchaman Crowds
This is definitely subject to change. There are some shows I need to rematch and there are many that I have yet to watch. Let me know what I ought to make a priority.
Toradora looks *extremely* out of place in your list. lol
BTW, I think the most glaring omissions here are Aoi Bungaku, Katanagatari, and Humanity Has Declined 🙂

yeah I haven’t seen any of those. I would have thought Clannad seemed the most out of place. I just love Toradora. Its got really great characters, especially Ami.

I felt that Clannad could reasonably be put in the same category as Ef and Euphonium. (Sorry if I’m wrong, since I dropped Clannad after 3 episodes.) But now that I think of it, Toradora also could reasonably be put in the same category as Haruhi. Maybe it’s just that I was surprised to see Toradora after the first five shows which seem to require a lot of thinking to appreciate fully.

Toradora is simple pleasure at its finest. The first few times I watched it, I thought its art style sucked, but I started noticing that they nail the characters’ expressions in the more emotional scenes, which was why I used that picture. I’m a sucker for romance, and I spent the first six months after I got into anime watching exclusively romance shows. It was a bit of escapism, but Toradora remains fantastic. It was the first anime that I really really loved.

lol most of these would be on my top list as well, and the ones that arent i havent actually watched; im curious whether you have a post/know of a good one on clannad’s problems though, since i watched that so long ago it never occurred to me to analyze it in a critical lens

Sure! That seems like a really great idea, since I’ve never seen a post explaining and exploring Clannad’s flaws that was written by somebody who loves the series anyway.
